Invited Into the Music: Three Years with Les Rhapsodes

David Rompré

For the past three seasons, I have had the privilege of photographing Le Chœur Les Rhapsodes and documenting the work of its artistic director, David Rompré. David and I first met as colleagues at Quebec High School, where we teach just down the hall from one another.

Over time, he invited me into another part of his world: the remarkable musical community he has helped build through Les Rhapsodes. Founded more than sixty years ago, the choir has become one of Québec City’s most respected choral ensembles.

Under David’s artistic direction, now spanning twenty-five years, Les Rhapsodes has brought together singers, instrumentalists, and guest soloists from Québec, Canada, and around the world. Their repertoire ranges from classical masterworks and sacred music to film scores, contemporary works, and ambitious collaborative productions.

What I love most about photographing the choir is the challenge of capturing something that cannot easily be seen: trust, concentration, joy, and the collective energy that emerges when dozens of voices become one. Whether in rehearsal or under the lights of the Palais Montcalm, every performance reflects countless hours of dedication and a shared commitment to artistic excellence.

These photographs come from my first season working with the choir. Looking back, they mark the beginning of a relationship that has allowed me to document not only concerts, but a vibrant artistic community that continues to enrich Québec City’s cultural life.

Thank you, David, and thank you to the members of Les Rhapsodes for welcoming me into your musical world.
